How to Avoid Being Locked Out of Your House

If you’re reading this and you’re locked out of your house or apartment, you might want to check out our blog on what to do if you’re locked out. There’s no need to be ashamed! At some point, everyone goes through this dilemma.

Once you’re back inside your home, we hope you’ll cozy up on your couch and come back to this blog for tips on how to avoid this in the future! The best way you can avoid being locked out of your home or apartment is by being prepared for the possibility before it happens.

After years in the locksmith industry, we’ve helped with countless residential and commercial lockouts and have put together a list of the top 6 lockout precautions you should be taking no matter what!

  1. Double and Triple-Check Before Closing the Door
  2. The simplest thing you can do to prevent a lockout is to develop a habit of double-checking that you indeed have your keys in hand before stepping out! We know this is easier said than done for some people. Keys are small and easy to misplace because you become used to carrying them around.

We hear you! So, to help you develop a better habit, we suggest keeping your keys in one specific place in your home, ideally close to the door. This visual reminder should hopefully help you avoid a future lockout.

  3. Make Duplicate Keys
  4. Don’t underestimate the value of spare keys! That’s right we said keys, as in multiple! While you don’t want to have your house keys hidden all over town, we do recommend having one or two keys in secure locations for simplified access.

Whether it’s for your home or apartment, a spare key can be a lifesaver in future lockout situations. Spare keys will save you time and the money you may have spent on hiring a locksmith (although, we’re always happy to help with your residential locksmith needs!).

You can keep your spare key with a neighbor or relative, in a secret hiding spot (we can’t emphasize the word “secret” enough here), at your office, or you can even keep them in your car’s glove compartment if the vehicle is normally kept in a private and locked garage.

  5. Consider a Master Key system
  6. If you live in an apartment complex, your landlord may use a master key system. If they don’t, you may want to suggest this to them. It will benefit them for maintenance checks and also benefit you in regard to potential future lockouts.

  7. Invest in a Key Finder
  8. If you’re like us, some days your memory doesn’t seem to cooperate with you. If you find yourself frequently losing your keys and not being able to find them, check out our list of the top 5 key finders available today.

  9. Make the Move to Keyless
  10. If you’re ready to make an upgrade to a product that is truly resilient to lockouts, you may want to consider going keyless. Keyless locks eliminate the need to carry and keep track of physical keys. There are many product options here, so do your homework and get in touch with us for some guidance.

  11. Find a Local Locksmith You Can Depend On
  12. If all else fails and these precautions didn’t help prevent you from being locked out of your home or apartment, it helps to have a local locksmith in your contacts. Check out our blog on what to look for when hiring a locksmith to be sure you can trust who you’re hiring for the job.
